This class is meant for those with little to no floral arranging experience who want to explore the fundamentals of floral design—proportion, balance, colour harmony, and focal points—while working with fresh, sustainably-grown blooms.
Focus will centre around using a “cutting garden” to create home-friendly vase arrangements for years to come. Each student will be given a Flaurel School Garden Guide to take home and refer to when needed!
For the SUMMER (yes, September is summer now!) version of this class, we will work with what is available in local, Ontario-grown stems. This may include: dahlia, zinnia, sunflowers, foxglove, hydrangea, garden roses, coneflower, rudbeckia, sedum, cosmos, delphinium.
What to expect
Introduction to seasonal flower selection and care: how to condition stems, extend vase life, and identify strong varieties for arranging.
Demonstration of vase mechanics: choosing the right vase, using floral foam alternatives, and building a secure structure without wire cages.
Step-by-step guided design: constructing a balanced silhouette, layering textures and heights, and creating movement with foliage and line flowers.
Personalized coaching: individual feedback to refine technique and adapt designs to your preferred style—loose garden, cottage, or classic formal.
Take-home arrangement: everyone creates and brings home a finished vase arrangement using flowers and greenery from the garden.
